Lumberjacks skate past visiting North Stars 5-2

The Granite City Lumberjacks assumed a 3-0 lead in the first period and held off the Breezy Point North Stars 5-2 in Tier III junior hockey action on Friday, Nov. 1.

Travis Kothenbeutel, Brett Love and Gavin Porter scored for Granite City in the first period. Kyle Whipple tallied on the power play, assisted by Bo Borowski, at 4:55 of the second period to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Whipple tallied again, assisted by Ryan Bittner, to make it 3-2 in the opening minute of the second session. But Kothenbeutel and Drew Otto both tallied later in the period for the final score.

Winning goaltender Austin Wilson stopped 24 shots while losing netminder Troy Pierce stopped 25 shots. Aidan Verbeke had two assists for Granite City.

The North Stars, 3-11-1 overall, are scheduled to play on the road at the North Iowa Bulls on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9.

Breezy Point will then play at Twin City Steel at Vadnais Center on Friday, Nov. 15, before returning home to play Granite City at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16.
