Brine-Doyle, Ryan, Fitzer chosen MVPs for Patriots

Juniors Jackie Brine-Doyle and Caitie Ryan were honored as co-MVPs for the girls while freshman Tony Fitzer was chosen most valuable for the boys at the Pequot Lakes Patriots cross country team banquet on Monday, Oct. 21.

Ryan advanced to the Class A state meet after finishing 16th at the Section 8A meet while Brine-Doyle just missed advancing to state by one position after placing 18th. Ryan was also an All-Mid-State Conference runner while Brine-Doyle earned all-conference honorable mention. Both runners received All-Birch Tree Conference honors.

Other varsity awards for the girls included: Colleen Tschida, outstanding first-year runner; Jessica Faacks, most dedicated; Elsa Headlee, most improved; Leric Larson, Patriot Award; and Sarah Rudlang, Coaches Award and captain. The Pequot Lakes girls also received All-State Academic Gold with a 3.99 grade-point average.

Rudlang was also a Birch Tree all-conference runner while Headlee received honorable mention.

Fitzer was MVP for the boys after he was All-Birch Tree Conference. Other individual awards included: Isaac Allen, outstanding first-year runner; Jacob Tschida, most dedicated; Seth Golden, most improved; and Grant Moe, Coaches Award. Moe, Golden and Allen were captains.

Golden was also all-conference in the Birch Tree while Reid Pierzinski received honorable mention. Golden also received honorable mention in the Mid-State Conference. The Pequot Lakes boys earned All-State Academic Gold with a 3.89 GPA.

Junior high and junior varsity highlights for Pequot Lakes included: Rachel Friberg, girls’ most valuable runner; and Ben Kostecka, boys’ most valuable for the second straight year.

The Patriot girls won the Pillager, Deer River and PR-B invitationals along with the Mid-State Conference meet while the boys won the Deer River and PR-B meets and were second in the Mid-State.
