Patriots edge Roseau in 2 OTs in quarterfinals

The fourth-seeded Pequot Lakes Patriots football team defeated the visiting No. 5 Roseau Rams 13-12 in double overtime in the Section 8AAA quarterfinals on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

Roseau forced the overtimes when they tied it 6-6 with 11.6 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter on a 26-yard touchdown pass. The Rams missed a chance to win when their two-point conversion run failed.

With muddy field conditions from the recent snowfall, the teams prepared for the overtime with each team having a possession starting from the opponent’s 10-yard line.

The first overtime was scoreless. Roseau then scored on a 10-yard quarterback run by Jacob Eaton. The conversion try failed but the Rams had a 12-6 lead.

It was the Patriots’ turn, and on the first play quarterback C.J. Borleis rolled out and hit Tyler Tappe for a touchdown pass to tie it. Pequot Lakes was preparing to have Borleis kick the extra point for the win, but the Patriots were called for a 12-men on the field penalty and the ball was moved back five yards. One the next play the snap from center was good, the hold was prefect and Borleis’ kick split the uprights for the win.

“C.J. (Borleis) did a great job in overtime with a nice pass to Tyler (Tappe) for a touchdown,” Pequot Lakes coach Chip Lohmiller said. “And then he kicked the extra point to win it.”

Patriots’ defensive coach Nick Grunzke praised the defensive effort of his players.

“I really have to salute our guys and their senior leadership led by Justin Mackenthun, Chris Westman and Lance Squires,” Grunzke said. “They did a nice job all night long, especially in the two overtimes.”

Pequot Lakes opened the scoring in the second quarter on a drive that started at midfield. The Patriots moved to the Roseau 17 on a drive highlighted by a 21-yard run by Borleis and a seven-yard carry by Tappe. That’s when Borleis completed a pass to Mackenthun over the middle, and he broke a tackle and scampered into the end zone with 7:14 left before halftime. Borleis’ extra-point kick hit the upright and it was 6-0.

The second half was scoreless until Roseau started the tying drive with just over two minutes remaining on a drive that started at the Rams’ 30 following a punt.

Roseau quickly moved the ball and reached the Pequot Lakes’ 26. Jared Pahlen then caught a scoring pass from Jacob Eaton with 11.6 seconds left to make it 6-6. The Patriots’ goal-line defense stopped the conversion run just short of the end zone to force the double overtime.
