Ryan wins girls' title at Birch Tree

Pequot Lakes’ Caitie Ryan won the girls race, but the Patriot girls’ team had to settle for second after losing the (sixth-runner) tiebreaker with United North Central in the Birch Tree Conference cross country meet on Tuesday, Oct. 15, in Menahga.

The Patriots’ Jackie Brine-Doyle finished second while teammate Sarah Rudlang was seventh and Elsa Headlee ninth. The top seven girls and boys earned all-conference while positions eight through 10 receive honorable mention.

“Caitie (Ryan) and Jackie (Brine-Doyle) both ran a great race, and Sarah (Rudlang) also made all-conference,” said Pequot Lakes coach Jon Dale, whose girls’ squad was the defending event champions. “UNC was able to tie our score when three of their runners each passed one of our girls in the final 100 meters.”

The Pequot Lakes boys also finished second led by Seth Golden’s fourth-place finish with Reid Pierzinski placing ninth and Tony Fitzer 10th.

“Seth (Golden) has been our top finisher for the past three meets,” Coach Dale said of Golden, who joined the Patriots last season after his family moved to Pequot Lakes. “Overall, I think all of our runners ran hard. There’s just more competition in the Birch Tree this year.”

The Pine River-Backus boys were fourth, led by T.J. Lukenan in sixth place to earn all-conference honors. Shayna Moore, who placed 17th, was the top finisher for the Tiger girls, who placed fifth.

PR-B and Pequot Lakes are scheduled to compete at the Section 8A meet on Friday, Oct. 25, in Bagley.

“We’re looking forward to the section meet,” Dale said. “You run your whole season for that meet, and it will be tough. Our section is so stacked with Perham and Park Rapids being the girls’ favorites and Warroad, Perham and Roseau being the top boys’ teams.”
