Patriots, Tigers run at Ruttger's

After sweeping titles at three straight meets, the Pequot Lakes Patriots boys’ and girls’ cross country teams faced one of their most competitive fields this season at the Crosby-Ironton Invitational on Thursday, Oct. 3, at Ruttger’s Resort in Deerwood.

The Pequot Lakes boys were third behind Brainerd and Crosby-Ironton while the Patriot girls finished fourth behind Brainerd, C-I and South Ridge.

“The C-I and Brainerd boys were both really good,” said Pequot Lakes coach Jon Dale. “It was good competition, but you run better against good competition. And our boys ran well.”

Seth Golden led the Patriots with an 11th place finish. The top Pequot Lakes girl was Caitie Ryan, who was 15th overall. Coach Dale said the Patriot girls also competed well despite missing two of its top three runners.

“We were missing Jackie Brine-Doyle, who was on a trip, and Leric Larson, who was sick,” Dale said. “So we only had one (Ryan) of our top three runners at the meet. But the team did well.”

The Pine River-Backus Tigers also competed at the meet. The PR-B boys were fifth while the girls finished seventh. T.J. Lukenan was 22nd for the top finish by a Tiger while Liz Downie was 46th to lead the PR-B girls.

PR-B will run in the Ottertail Central Invitational at Henning at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10. Also on Oct. 10, Pequot Lakes in scheduled to compete in the Mid-State Conference meet at Emily Greens Golf Course at 3 p.m.

“The Mid-State meet will also have tough competition with Detroit Lakes, Park Rapids and C-I,” Dale said. “It’s a high-caliber meet for the boys and girls that will prepare us ready for sections.”

Dale is also looking forward to competing at the Birch Tree Conference meet on Tuesday, Oct. 15, in Menahga.

“It will be fun for our boys to go against Ottertail Central again,” said Dale, whose squad edged OTC by one point to claim the title at last month’s Pillager Invitational at Madden’s Resort.
