Patriots advance to semifinals

The third-seeded Pequot Lakes Patriots tennis team blanked No. 6 East Grand Forks 7-0 in the Section 8A quarterfinals on Tuesday, Oct. 8. The Patriots, 15-4 overall, will face the winner between No. 7 Wadena-Deer Creek and No. 2 Park Rapids at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, in East Grand Forks. The championship match will follow the semifinals.

No Pequot Lakes player dropped a set on its way to advancing to the team semifinals.

“Haley Wiebolt had a nice comeback at No. 1 singles,” said Pequot Lakes coach Monica Sergent. “She won the first game 6-2, but was down 4-1 in the second game before coming back to win 7-5. All of our singles players did well.

“Our No. 1 and 2 doubles teams started out slow, but once they calmed down and got their feet moving, they played well.”

Other quarterfinal matchups include, the Perham/New York Mills winner vs. No. 1 Staples-Motley; and No. 4 Crookston vs. No. 5 Roseau.

Section individual competition will begin on Oct. 11, following the team final. Individual play concludes on Saturday, Oct. 12.
