Tigers clawed by Panthers

The Pine River-Backus Tigers volleyball team suffered a 3-1 setback to the Park Rapids in a home match on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

The Tigers lost the opening games 25-20 and 25-21, and then won 25-20 before losing a close fourth game 25-23.

The Tigers, 10-6 overall, will have played Sebeka on Tuesday, Oct. 1, and then travel to Pequot Lakes to play the Patriots on Thursday, Oct. 10.

Against Park Rapids, PR-B lost the first game when, after being ahead 15-14, they gave up a four-point run and were unable to come back.

The second game was closer as the Tigers surrendered a 19-18 lead on a six-point run by the Panthers. In the third game PR-B was down 8-4 when they got a four-point run to tie it, including kills by Journee Howard and Lily Wiemann. The Tigers eventually won.

The fourth game was a nail-biter as PR-B was edged by two points. They trailed 9-5 before rallying to tie it 9-9 on kills by Howard, Wiemann, and Megan Felthous.

The Panthers took the lead again, but PR-B rallied for a 19-18 lead. But the Tigers were unable to stop Park Rapids and lost the match.

Tigers 3, N-K 0

On Thursday, Sept. 26, in Pine River, the Tigers easily defeated the Northome-Kelliher Mustangs 25-19, 25-18, and 25-21 despite several players suffering from illness.

In the first game, the Tigers were only up 10-8 when they solidified their lead with a five-point run including a kill and ace by Howard.

The Tigers were down 13-9 in the second game when they went on a six-point run for a 15-13 lead, and never looked back to take the win. In the third game the Tigers were only up 20-19 when they went on a four-point run including two kills by Felthous. N-K added two points before PR-B won.

Tigers 3, Pillager 1

On Friday, Sept. 27, the Tigers traveled to Pillager to play the Huskies in an afternoon match for Pillager’s homecoming. The Huskies won the first game 25-21, but the Tigers took the next three 25-23, 25-15, and 25-15.

The first game was close, and the Tigers almost had a come-back as they went on a four-point run of three kills and a block for a kill by Felthous, but it wasn’t enough. The Tigers were down 23-22 in the second game when they went on a three-point run including kills by Felthous and Porta to take the win. The Tigers won the third game on a six-point run that included kills by Staples and Howard, and an ace by Felthous.

The Tigers had a five-point run mid-way through the fourth game to lengthen and help keep their lead to take the win against Pillager, which dropped to 1-9.
