Patriots sweep titles at Deer River

The Pequot Lakes Patriots won both the boys and girls titles at the Deer River cross country invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 24, in Menahga.

The Patriot boys compiled 27 points by having five runners finish in the top 10, including Connor Dale placing third and Seth Golden taking fourth. Staples-Motley was second with 48 points as the Cardinals’ Stephen Plopper was individual champion.

Pine River-Backus finished third, led by Troy Fetter’s 18th place finish.

In the girls’ race, Pequot Lakes was first with 30 points while the Cardinals were second with 44. The Patriots were led by Jackie Brine-Doyle, who placed fourth, and Caitie Ryan, who finished fifth. S-M’s Haley Christofferson was the individual champion.

Pequot Lakes and PR-B were scheduled to compete at the Jim Machacek Invitational on Tuesday, Oct. 1, in Pine River. Both teams will also run at the Crosby-Ironton Invitational at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, at Ruttger’s Resort on Bay Lake.

The PR-B girls were fourth with Liz Downie finishing 21st and teammate Cheyenne Swenson was 22nd.
