Patriots edged by Little Falls

The Pequot Lakes Patriots volleyball team was defeated by the visiting Little Falls Flyers 25-22, 25-16, 24-26 and 26-24 in a non-conference match on Monday, Sept. 30.

Vanessa Lane had 17 kills while teammate Katie White added 16 for the Patriots, who had their five-game winning streak stopped. Morgan Lohmiller added 19 set assists while White had 17 set assists.

“We played well at times, but Little Falls is a good team,” Pequot Lakes coach Kate Dale said of the Flyers, who have won four straight. “They have two or three real good hitters, and they covered the floor real well.”

Dale added that “except for the second game, the other three games were close.”

“We received their serves much better in the third and fourth games,” she said.

The Patriots’ sophomore outside hitter Laura Squires said she didn’t think her team played well in the first two games.

“I wish we could have won the fourth game, and taken it to the short fifth game,” Squires said, “but (Little Falls) is a hard hitting team.”

The Flyers’ Kendra Pohlman had 20 set assists and 15 kills and teammates Melanie Dorn posted 22 set assists and 17 digs, and Sierra Virnig added 18 kills and 25 digs.

The Flyers improve to 8-7 overall while Pequot Lakes drops to 11-5. The Patriots were scheduled to play at Detroit Lakes on Tuesday, Oct. 1, and then face Park Rapids in another Mid-State Conference match on Tuesday, Oct. 8.

Patriots 2nd in Silver

Pequot Lakes finished second to East Grand Forks in the Silver Division of the Fergus Falls tournament on Saturday, Sept. 28. The Patriots were defeated by EGF 25-19, 25-16 in the Silver final.

Lane had 25 kills and White added 23 to lead Pequot Lakes, which beat Pelican Rapids 2-0 and lost to Kittson Central 25-12, 25-19 in pool play and then went on to beat Park Rapids 22-25; 25-22; 15-7 in the Silver semifinals.

Lane had 13 kills and five blocks to help lead visiting Pequot Lakes past Walker-Hackensack-Akeley 25-10, 26-24, 22-25, 10-25, 15-10 in a non-conference match on Thursday, Sept. 26.

“Our girls played their best volleyball of the year by far in the first game,” said Pequot Lakes coach Kate Dale. “We also played well in the second game, although we only won by two. Then we lost the next two matches, but bounced back to win the fifth game.”

Katie White added 11 kills, four blocks and 18 set assists. Laura Squires had 35 digs, Ashley Abear had 27 digs and Amanda Nies had 23.
