PL girls, boys win at Madden's

Although Pillager High School hosts the cross country meet, Pequot Lakes junior Jackie Brine-Doyle must think the annual invitational at Madden’s Resort West Golf Course is her race.

That’s because Brine-Doyle earned her first varsity win two years ago at Madden’s. The junior repeated that victory by again leading the field on Thursday, Sept. 19, and she covered the course in 17 minutes, 20 seconds. Her individual title helped the Patriots win the girls’ title.

“This is a hilly course, but it’s a nice change,” Brine-Doyle said after the win. “My goal was to get the lead right away and keep it because I really don’t have a big kick at the end.

“The win was nice, but my main goal is to keep improving my time as we work up to sections.”

Brine-Doyle actually ran most of the race close to teammate Caitie Ryan, who finished third.

“Jackie and Caitie are good for each other,” Pequot Lakes coach Jon Dale said. “Their biggest competition is often among themselves as they’ve been flip-flopping finishes at meets. They push each other, and they respect each other.”

Other Pequot Lakes’ runners who finished in the top 10 were Leric Larson, fourth, Sarah Rudlang, sixth, and Elsa Headlee, ninth.

Cheyenne Swenson led the Pine River-Backus girls, who finished with an incomplete score.

Patriot boys also win

In the boys’ meet at Madden’s, the Pequot Lakes boys placed five runners in the top 10 as the Patriots edge Ottertail Central for first place. The Patriots’ Tony Fitzer finished third, followed by Seth Golden, fourth, Reid Pierzinski, fifth, Isaac Allen, eighth, and Karl Brine-Doyle, 10th.

“It was totally a team effort,” Coach Dale said of the one-point win. “Our sixth and seventh runners finished ahead of (Ottertail Central’s) fifth runner, which cost him points, and helped us win. That really shows the team concept of our sport.”

“The Ottertail Central boys beat us for the Birch Tree Conference championship last year. So that shows we’re getting better. We had nice wins for our boys and girls today.”

The third-place PR-B boys were led by Luke Downie, who was 19th.

Pequot Lakes was scheduled to compete at Deer River on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The Patriots and PR-B will compete at the Jim Machacek Invitational on Tuesday, Oct. 1, in Pine River.
