Patriots win 4th straight match

The Pequot Lakes Patriots’ volleyball team earned its fourth straight victory by sweeping the Aitkin Gobblers 25-19, 25-24, 25-22 in non-conference action on Monday, Sept. 23.

“It didn’t come real easy tonight,” said Pequot Lakes coach Kate Dale, “but Aitkin is a good team, and it was nice to beat them in three games.”

The Gobblers drop to 10-3 overall while the Patriots improve to 8-2. Pequot Lakes is scheduled to play at Walker-Hackensack-Akeley on Thursday, Sept. 26, and then at the Fergus Falls Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 28. The Patriots return home to face Little Falls on Monday, Sept. 30, and then go to Detroit Lakes on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

Pequot Lakes’ Vanessa Lane had 10 kills, six blocks and seven digs while teammate Katie White added eight kills, four blocks, 18 set assists and 12 digs.

“Everyone played well, and it was a big team win,” said Lane, who has combined for 31 kills in the past three matches.

On Thursday, Sept. 19, Lane smacked down 11 kills and served five aces to lead Pequot Lakes past the Cardinals 25-18, 25-18, 25-19 in a Mid-State Conference matchup. White added 12 set assists, six kills and seven digs as the Patriots improved to 2-0 in conference action.

“Both (Vanessa) Lane and (Katie) White had big nights, but a lot of girls also played a part in the victory,” said Pequot Lakes coach Kate Dale. “Any time we beat Staples-Motley it’s a big win because we make it harder work than it should have been.”

In the first game, the Patriots assumed a 9-5 lead behind three ace serves by Lohmilller before pulling away. In the second game, Lane had five straight service points to give Pequot Lakes a 9-2 lead. The Cardinals later cut the deficit to 17-14. The Patriots later extended the lead to 19-15 before Justyne Litzau served three points for a 24-16 lead.

Many Pequot Lakes players came off the bench to contribute in the third game as the Patriots built a 6-1 lead. The game was later tied 10-10 before Miller served four points to make it 14-11. Pequot Lakes then led 17-14 before Lane served four points to make it 21-14. Deb Mitchell later scored the match winning point with an ace serve to make it 25-19.

Samantha Simon turned in four blocks and two kills for the Cardinals, who drop to 1-2 in the conference and 3-7 overall.

White collected 20 set assists, 15 digs, eight kills, and four blocks to lead Pequot Lakes past Sebeka 19-25, 25-16, 25-19, 21-25, 15-8 in a non-conference match on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Lane added 10 kills, 10 blocks, and five digs while Ashley Abear had 15 digs.

Pequot Lakes JV, C Team win

The Pequot Lakes Patriots junior varsity and C squad volleyball teams both triumphed against Staples-Motley on Thursday, Sept. 19.

The junior varsity defeated the Cardinals 25-16, 25-20, 15-7. The first game was close, with the Patriots leading 8-7 as Jessica Nies served eight points to make it 14-7. Pequot Lakes’ Caitlin Carkhuff served the final four points for the win with Kelsey Hart getting the game-clinching kill.

The second game was tied 10-10 and 15-15 following two ace serves by Taya Salminen. The Patriots eventually led 20-18 when Corina Ruud served four points and Salminen had the final two kills for the 25-20 win.

Pequot Lakes enjoyed a 6-4 lead in the third game when Quinn Kratochvil served three points and Deb Mitchell two points for a 12-6 lead. Carkhuff then served the final three points for the win.
