Tigers pound W-H-A 56-0

The Pine River-Backus Tigers football team heated up for eight rushing touchdowns to defeat the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolves on a brisk Friday, Sept. 13, in Pine River.

“We thought we had the advantage upfront and would be able to run the ball against them,” said Tigers’ coach Tom Demars. “We executed very well and defense was well prepared we shut down every phase of their game.”

PR-B improves to 3-0 overall, and will travel to Cass Lake-Bena on Friday, Sept. 20. CL-Bena was defeated by Bagley 26-6 for their first loss of the season on Sept. 13.

The Tigers received the opening kickoff but were unable to get their offense going. The Wolves would begin their first possession on their own one-yard line after keeping the Tigers out of the end zone after recording a first down their drive would end with an interception by Tony Brunhuber.

Tigers would turn that into a 9-yard rushing touchdown by Henry Krecklau who also added the two-point conversion putting the Tigers up 8-0.

At the 11:08 mark in the second quarter Krecklau would power up the gut to the Wolves’ 6 for a his second touchdown of the night. Brandon Mager would grab the two-point conversion from Zach Struss giving the Tigers a 16-0 lead.

The Wolves would then begin at its own 25 when Weston Smith sacked Dustin Ovitt and on the next play Brandon Mager would pick Ovitt off at the Wolves’ 27. Krecklau added his third touchdown of the night with 9:14 left in the quarter he also added the two-point conversion giving the Tigers the 24-0 lead.

Jared Adkins would add two more rushing touchdowns a one yard plunge and another 1 yard plunge after the Wolves had fumbled at its 36 yard line giving the Tigers a 36-0 lead. As the first half came to an end Travon Pederson brought a buzz to the crowd as he crossed the goal line as the horn sounded on a 50-yard touchdown run giving the Tigers the 43-0 halftime lead.

The Wolves received the second half kickoff and were finally able to drive the ball over midfield to the Tiger 37 before Travon Pederson picked Ovitt off and returned it 30 yards. Krecklau add his fourth touchdown when he took over at quarterback and scampered in from 7 yards out putting the Tigers in front 50-0 after the Hank Raph extra point. Nate Adkins would force a fifth Wolves turnover as he pick Dustin Ovitt off at the Tiger 6-yard line but the Tigers could do anything with that turnover and punt.

With 2:01 it go in the game the Tigers would finish the scoring as Timmy Bardeaux took the pitch to the right and scampered 57 yards to give the Tigers the 56-0 win.
