PR-B volleyball team takes bronze
The Pine River-Backus Tigers captured the bronze title as they finished ninth out of 12 teams at the 27th annual Barb Neprud volleyball tournament on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Crosby-Ironton High School.
After losing their first two matches, the Tigers came back to win the bronze division, beating out the Cass Lake-Bena Panthers 25-10, 25-13, and the Eveleth-Gilbert Bears 25-18, 25-10.
The Tigers first match was against the Chisholm Bluestreaks, and the Tigers lost in two games by scores of 25-12, 25-20. The Tigers second match was against the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolves, and the Tigers again lost in two games by scores of 25-16, 25-23.
The Tigers, 6-5 overall, are scheduled to play the Cass Lake-Bena Panthers at Cass Lake Thursday, Sept. 19.

Megan Felthous had 15 kills to help Pine River-Backus defeated the visiting Rangers on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
In the first game the Tigers were ahead 11-8 when they went on a five-point run including kills by Journee Howard, Lily Wiemann, and Megan Porta, and an ace serve by Callie Tilbury. The Tigers eventually won 25-14.
The second game was slightly closer, with the Tigers still on top 25-17. The third game was tied 3-3 when the Tigers gave up an 11-point run, and spent the rest of the game trying to work their way back, but they didn’t make it and took the loss 25-17. The Tigers took over early in the fourth game as they went on an eight point run followed by a five-point run to take the lead 13-3. The Tigers won 25-11, on two ace serves by Wiemann.

PR-B easily defeated the Wildcats 25-9, 25-20, and 25-23 in Laporte on Thursday, Sept. 12.
The Tigers were already up 13-6 in the first game when they lengthened their lead to 20-6 with a seven-point run, including two kills each by Megan Felthous and Tilbury, and an ace serve by Wiemann.
In the second game, the Tigers were ahead 12-10 when they went on a six point run to lengthen the lead and ensure the win. The third game was much closer as the Tigers were down 22-19 when they went on a six point run, including two kills by Felthous and an ace serve by Porta, to take the lead and win the game.
