The Pequot Lakes Patriots volleyball team lost the first game 25-17 against Wadena-Deer Creek, but then rallied with 25-23, 25-21 and 26-24 wins to end a long losing streak against the Mid-State Conference rivals.

For the past decade, a talented W-DC squad dominated the Patriots, winning 33 of 35 games.

“After we dropped the first game, the girls put things together, and although it wasn’t easy, we finally came out on the winning side,” said Pequot Lakes coach Kate Dale.

The Patriots, 5-2 overall before playing at Sebeka on Tuesday, Sept. 17, are scheduled to host Staples-Motley on Thursday, Sept. 19, and then Aitkin on Monday, Sept. 23.

Before the game, a dedication took place for the first varsity activity before a large crowd at the new Pequot Lakes High School gymnasium.

The first point by a Patriot player in the new facility was scored by Morgan Lohmiller.

The first game was tied early 7-7 before the Wolverines eventually scored 12 straight points. To assume a commanding 19-8 lead on way to a win.

The second game was close, including being tied 11-11 after three service points by Kelsey Hart. Pequot Lakes eventually led 18-15 after three service points by Laura Squires and a key by Vanessa Lane. W-DC rallied to later tie it 23-23, but kills by the Patriots’ Katie White and Amanda Nies put the game away.

The third game was close from the start, and was tied 8-8 after Pequot Lakes’ Justyne Litzau served four points. Barb Miller later served six points as the Patriots assumed a 15-9 edge. Pequot Lakes later led 21-19 before winning by four points behind two kills by Lane and the game-winner by Lohmiller.

In the fourth game, the Patriots grabbed a 16-7 lead behind several kills by Lane. But the Wolverines came roaring back as the game was tied several times. W-DC later led 24-23, but Pequot Lakes tied it 24-24, and with Litzau serving a sideout that put the Patriots ahead 25-24. A kill by Katie White put the game and match away.

“A lot of girls played well as Kelsey (Hart) gave us some good minutes, both Justyne (Litzau) and Barb (Miller) scored well, Amanda (Nies) and Ashley (Abear) made some big plays and Katie (White), Morgan (Lohmiller) and Vanessa (Lane) did a nice job up front while Laura (Squires) had some nice digs.”
