It was a warm Friday, Sept. 6, night as the Pine River-Backus Tigers played host to the Prairie Valley Nighthawks.

The Tigers would receive and went on an 81-yard drive capped off by a Zach Struss to Shane Fleming 31-yard touchdown with Henry Krecklau adding the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

The Nighthawks’ first drive would end with a fumble at the Prairie Valley 42-yard line, which was recovered by PR-B’s Jared Adkins. Meanwhile, PR-B extended their lead to 14-0 when Krecklau ran 29 yards for a touchdown. The conversion run failed.

The Tigers added three touchdowns in the second quarter, the first came when Brandon Mager caught a 15-yard scoring pass from Struss. The successful conversion run made it 22-0.

With 6:32 remaining before halftime, the Nighthawks would have a costly turnover as Henry Krecklau brought a buzz to the Tiger fans as he would return a Prairie Valley fumble 80 yards for a touchdown, and Jared Adkins would add the two-point conversion to give the home team a 30-0 lead.

PR-B added a final score when Mager caught another 15-yard throw from Struss, who tossed his fifth touchdown pass in the opening two games.

Defense was the key for the Tigers, who forced the Nighthawks into six first-half turnovers four fumbles and two interceptions.

“To be up 38-0 after the first half was outstanding,” said PR-B coach Tom Demars. “It was our best half of football I’ve seen in a long time.”

The Nighthawks would receive in the second half kickoff, and put together a long drive, which was capped by Skyler Meiners’ quarterback keeper with a 3-yard scamper with 7:20 left in the third.

Meiners would add one more score in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter on a 2-yard quarterback that cut the deficit to 38-14.

After the Tigers punted, the Nighthawks went on a long drive but that was spoiled by a Taylor Zacakowsky interception at the PR-B 6 with 2:48 remaining.

The Nighthawks would cap the scoring with 6.9 seconds left on a C.J. Marotto to Kyle Schlosser 3-yard touchdown pass. The conversion run was successful, but Prairie Valley ran out of time.

“We came flying out of the gates, but we didn’t finish the way we wanted to,” Demars said. “We knew we would have our hands full. There’s still lots of work to do.”

The Tigers will host the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolves on Friday Sept. 13. W-H-A, dropped to 0-2 overall after losing to Cass Lake-Bena 34-28 on Friday, Sept. 6.
