Verndale edges PR-B spikers

The Pine River-Backus Tigers’ varsity volleyball team started its season with at the Verndale Pirates, and narrowly lost in five games by scores of 26-24, 23-25, 25-13, 25-19, 15-9, in non-conference action on Thursday, Aug. 29.

The first game was close as the Tigers controlled it at the beginning, but Verndale slowly worked their way back up until, with the Tigers ahead 20-14, they went on a seven point run to tie the game.

Verndale took the lead 23-21 after getting two kills in a row, the Tigers tied it again with a kill by Megan Porta and an out-of-bounds call against the Pirates.

Verndale got to 24 first to force the first game point, but the Tigers managed to hold it off with a kill by Lily Wiemann. Unfortunately, Verndale answered with two points for the win 26-24.

In the second game, with the score tied 5-5, the Tigers went on an eight point run, including a kill and a block for a kill by Megan Felthous, a kill by Wiemann, and two ace serves by Porta.

Once again Verndale slowly came back until they tied the game 23-23, but this time the Tigers came out on top as they scored two points, including another ace by Porta, and won the game 25-23.

The third game was not a good one for the Tigers as they kept it close until the score was 5-5, then gave up a five point run to Verndale and were unable to catch up again. The Tigers lost 13-25.

The fourth game was another close one as the Tigers went ahead 10-7 but lost their lead 10-11. With Verndale ahead 16-14, the Tigers came back with a five point run including kills by Felthous and Wiemann.

With the score 21-19, the Tigers got a four point run, including a set-kill by Journee Howard and a block for a kill by Porta, to take the win 25-19.

In the fifth game Verndale got the first two points, but the Tigers took the lead 4-2. Verndale re-took the lead 5-4, the Tigers tied it 5-5, and Verndale went ahead 8-5.

The Tigers came back on a kill by Wiemann and an out of bounds by the Pirates to make the score 7-8, but Verndale answered with a five point run to make the score 13-7.

The Tigers managed just two more points before Verndale captured the win of both the game, 15-9, and the match, three games to two.

The Tigers are scheduled to play at Nevis on Thursday, Sept. 5, and then host the Pine And Lakes tournament on Saturday, Sept. 7. PR-B then hosts Crosby-Ironton on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
