Patriots improve to 8-2

The Pequot Lakes Patriots tennis team swept visiting Little Falls in non-conference tennis action on Thursday, Aug. 29.

The Patriots, 0-1 in Mid-State Conference play and 8-2 overall, are scheduled to travel to Crosby-Ironton on Tuesday, Sept. 3, and then play at Perham on Thursday, Sept. 5.

“Our singles lineup all played consistently and set the tone early,” said Pequot Lakes coach Monica Sergent. “All three doubles teams struggled to win their first sets but then dominated their second sets.”

Four Patriots raised their records to 9-1 – singles players Haley Wiebolt, Sydney Holt and Lauren Bengtson; and No. 3 doubles player Erika Monson. Pequot Lakes’ Sarah Najjar is 8-1 at No. 3 doubles while Madison Galligan-Alex Nelson is 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Patriots 2-1 at quadrangular

Wiebolt and Bengtson both won three singles matches as Pequot Lakes won two of three dual meets at the Park Rapids Quadrangular on Tuesday, Aug. 27. The Patriots downed Crookston and also Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 6-1 before falling to Park Rapids 4-3.

“Our goal was to come home 3-0 for the day, and we came up a little short when we lost to Park Rapids,” Sergent said. “I was extremely pleased with our overall play for the day.

“We had a big win over Crookston, which is a section opponent, and we played well against Long Prairie. Our Park Rapids match could have gone either way with the tie breaker loss at No. 1 doubles.”
