Patriots off to 5-1 start in tennis

After sweeping Big Lake 7-0, the Pequot Lakes Patriots tennis team absorbed their first loss of the season as they fell to the Foley Falcons 5-2 on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at Foley.

“We’re pleased to be 5-1 (overall) at this point,” said Pequot Lakes coach Monica Sergent. “I was hopeful that this would be our year to beat Foley, but I don’t think we played as well as we’re capable of playing. It’s too bad we won’t have a chance to play them later in the season.”

In singles play, the Patriots’ Sydney Holt improved to 6-0 at No. 3. Haley Wiebolt is 5-1 at No. 1 and Lauren Bengtson is 5-1 at No. 4. Jaden Linder is 3-3.

“Sydney (Holt) is playing well after moving from four singles to three,” Sergent said. “Sydney has showed that she’s up to the challenge.

“Haley (Wiebolt) has also shown great improvement. She had a close 5-7 game against Foley’s Abby Kantor, who is ranked fourth or fifth.”

In doubles, Ellie Erholtz-Carly Fyle improved to 4-2 at No. 1, Madison Galligan-Alex Nelson is 5-1 at No. 2, and Erika Monson is 5-1 at No. 3. Sarah Najjar is 4-1 and Maggie Heggerston is 1-0 while splitting time at No. 3 doubles.

Pequot Lakes, 5-1 overall, were scheduled to play at the Park Rapids quadrangular on Tuesday, Aug. 27, and then host Little Falls at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29.
