PR-B football team will have changes at key positions

Pine River-Backus football team has some key positions to fill after the graduation key players on offense.

“We have a lot of positions to fill after graduating two senior quarterbacks and our starting tailback and a number of linemen,” said PR-B coach Tom Demars. “At this point it looks like sophomore Zach Struss will start at quarterback with junior Henry Krecklau taking some snaps. Krecklau will also be playing halfback.”

Demars added that senior receivers Brandon Mager and Shane Flemming and tight end Jace Loge “all should make plays” for the Tigers.

“Senior returnees Weston Smith and Tony Brunhuber will also have big roles on the offensive line, and defensively as well,” said Demars, who is staring his fourth season as head football coach. “Senior Jared Adkins will anchor the offensive backfield and linebacker corps.”

Letterwinners include Brunhuber, Adkins, Travon Pederson, Loge, Mager, Trevor Johnson, Flemming, Smith, Hank Steffen, Nick Gravdahl, Krecklau, Henry Raph and Zach Semmler.

Others who could contribute are Jacob Harper, Caleb Peterson, Triston Rubner, Sam Pelkey, Shawn Brandon, Ben Remington, Jordan Philipson, Zach Struss, Tanner Smith, Conrad Bueckers, Nate Adkins, Austin Keep, Anthony Keeg and Coleman Larson.

“Right now we mainly need to take a good look at everybody and see how all the pieces are going to fit together,” said Demars, who is assisted by Rob Johnson, Mark Gonnion, Terry Holden, Mike Dinnel and Travis Hoffarth.

Last fall, the Tigers finished 5-3 in the North Star East Conference and 6-4 overall.

PR-B lost to the Pillager Huskies 51-7 in the second round of the Section 6A playoffs. The Tigers had defeated Royalton 20-8 in the first round.
