Nisswa Pony League teams meet

The two Nisswa Pony League baseball teams met in the final game of the regular season on Wednesday, July 17, in Northern Lakes Pony League action. The No. 1 team Pony team defeated the No. 2 squad 7-1.

Nisswa’s No. 1 team consists of Hunter and Chase Larson, Ethan Lehman, Max Whitebread, Gage and Garret Westlund, Brady Jurek, Cody Kettleson, Zach Sjoblad, Nate Traut, Sam Schuess, Calen Maske and Adam Casanova. The No. 2 includes Gabe Raguse, Grant Mathies, Will Peabody, Cody Huss, Dave and Jacob Olson, Casey Welch, Darrion Anderson, Deven Psyck, Ean Morgan, Jared Marchaler and Tom Sullivan.

Jurek was the starting pitcher for the No. 1 team while Peabody started for No. 2. The No. 1 team rallied a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third on Casanova’s RBI hit. No. 1 then broke it open with five runs in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Jurek and a two-run single by Kettleson.

Lehman relieved Jurek to start the fourth inning, and allowed singles to Peabody and Huss but Lehman eventually struck out two hitters for the final outs to end the threat. Lehman added two strikes in each of the final two innings to finish with seven. He only allowed one hit over three innings.

The No. 1 team improves to 8-2 overall while the No. 2 team dropped to 2-8 going into the playoffs. The No. 1 team is seeded third and receives a first-round bye.

Nisswa 5, Pillager 0

On Monday, July 15, Nisswa’s No. 1 team shutout Pillager 5-0 behind the pitching of Ethan Lehman and Gage Westlund. Lehman pitched three innings while Westlund tossed four. The two combined to allow just three hits while striking out nine.

Nisswa pushed across single runs in the first, third and sixth innings and added a pair in the fourth. Whitebread, Garrett Westlund and Chase Larson all had two hits while Maske rapped a double.
