PL softball team ties, beats Perham

The Pequot Lakes’ 16-under fast-pitch summer softball team tied visiting Perham 1-1 in the opener and then triumphed 10-0 in the second game on Wednesday, July 10.

Pequot Lakes will play at the state tournament on Saturday, July 20, at Chanhassen.

The opener against Perham was tied 1-1 after five innings. The game finished as a tie after the teams failed to score in one extra inning.

Perham managed an unearned run in the second inning off pitcher Katie White, who had nine strikes while walking two and allowing just one hit. Pequot Lakes scored its run in the fourth on a leadoff triple by Haley Wiebolt and a sacrifice fly by Mattie Galligan. Pequot Lakes finished with just three hits.

In the second game, Pequot Lakes’ Taylor Crocker allowed just three hits while striking out two to earn the pitching win. Pequot Lakes scored three times in the first innings, once in the second, twice in the third and four times in the fourth. White, Galligan and Emilee Buell each had two RBI.

“Katie (White) and Taylor (Croker) pitched well as they didn’t give up an earned run,” said Pequot Lakes coach Bret Sergent. “We played good defense in the second game with two double plays.”

14U Blue sweeps Staples

The Pequot Lakes’ 14-under fast-pitch team earned a sweep at Staples 10-2 and 11-3 on Monday, July 8. The Blue team advances to state on Saturday, July 20, in Elk River.

In game one, Taya Salminen was the winning pitcher with five strikeouts. Jessica Faacks, Meghan Nelson and Kenzie Nelson all had RBI hits.

In the second game, Shelby Edblad was the winning pitcher with three strikeouts. Faacks, Caitlyn Carkhuff, Nelson, Hope Anderson and Madi Rupp all had RBI hits.

The Pequot Lakes’ 14-under Red team beat Pine River 10-9 in four innings on Sunday at Perham. The other tournament games on Sunday were rained out.

The Red team won in the bottom of the fourth. Bre Sewell had 10 strikeouts for the win. Alex Kotaska and Jacqueline Cook each had two RBI. The Red team finish 7-4 overall.

On Monday, July 8, the Red team split with Bemidji – losing the first game 15-9 and winning the second game 12-4. Sewell pitched both games for the Red.

Kotaska was 2-2 in the opener while Clare Ganley scored three runs in the second game and Kostaska added two RBI.
