PL youth softball teams compete

The Pequot Lakes 16-under fast-pitch softball team has compiled a 4-0 record to start the Junior Olympic season.

Visiting Pequot Lakes defeated Staples-Motley 6-1 in the first game on Wednesday, June 19. Pequot Lakes assumed a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on singles by Katie White and Maddie Galligan and a two-run double by Emilee Buell. They added four more runs in the fifth, sparked by Barb Miller’s two-run single. White finished with two hits. White allowed just one hit while striking out eight.

In the second game, Pequot Lakes won 1-0 as they finished with just four hits while Staples-Motley had two. The only run came in the second inning when Buell doubled and scored on an infield out. White had 10 strikeouts and did not allow a walk.

A week earlier, Pequot Lakes defeated Perham by scores of 5-1 and 16-5. In the opener, White had a two-run homer and Liz Anderson and Galligan each had doubles. White was also the winning pitcher as she finished with five strikeouts.

Taylor Crocker was the winning pitcher in the second game. Buell drove in three runs while Haley Wiebolt, White and Emily Marchwick each had two RBI. White, Galligan, Marchwick and Buell each had two hits.

14-under team sweeps Bemidji

The Pequot Lakes 14-under softball team swept a doubleheader against visiting Bemidji by scores of 11-8 and 13-8 on Monday, June 17.

In the opener, Pequot Lakes trailed 4-3 in the bottom of the second before they answered with five runs as Maggie Miska, Clare Ganley, Karlie Trottier and Alexa Holm each had hits. Bemidji tied it, but Pequot Lakes came back with three runs in the third as Kiya Danielson singled, Bri Sewall tripled and Alex Kotaska doubled.

In the second game, Pequot Lakes scored five times in each the first two innings. They added three runs in the third behind a triple by Sewall, who was the winning pitcher.
