PL softball players honored
Junior pitcher Katie White was chosen most valuable player for the Pequot Lakes Patriots softball team at the postseason banquet on Thursday, June 20.
White batted .423 with a team-high 29 RBI with six homers and 20 runs scored. As a pitcher, White had 149 strikeouts in 127 innings. She posted a 1.65 earned-run average while compiling a 15-4 record. She was also a second-team all-state selection.
Four players made the All-Mid-State Conference team – Jessica Kreitz, Lindzee Johnson, White and Kayla Miller while Haley Wiebolt, Hannah Zimmerman, Emily Wgeishofski and Barb Miller received honorable mention.
Team captains were seniors Kreitz and Johnson and juniors White, Kayla Miller and Erin Rudbeck. First-year letterwinners were Eevi Vaahto, Angela Cole, Becca Langer, Wiebolt, Barb Miller, Taylor Crocker, Whitney Marchwick and Madison Galligan.
Other awards were Zimmerman, top batting average at .431 while Wiebolt was second at .427. Zimmerman and Wiebolt earned the Golden Glove award and were selected most improved. The Patriot Award went to Rudbeck, who batted .293, while the coaches’ award went to Cole, who had five hits in 10 at bats. Kreitzå, who hit .415 with 23 RBI, received all-state honorable mention.
As a team, the Patriots received the Academic Silver Award. Pequot Lakes activities director Marc Helmrichs handed out Class AA state participation certificates as the Patriots advanced to state for the first time. Helmrichs also awarded head coach Bret Sergent with plaques for being chosen Mid-State Conference coach of the year and Section 6AA coach of the year.
“This bunch of girls has been 40-5 over the past two years, and had a 21-1 combined record in conference games," Sergent said.
