Golfers raise money for Cass County 4-Hers

Four of six teams entered in the first Cass County 4-H State Fair Scholarship benefit golf tournament were able to play Sunday despite an all-day rain at Black Bear Golf Course.

The two remaining teams took a rain check and were scheduled to play their rounds during the succeeding week.

Barb Frederick and Sue Bye Elyea, 4-H adult volunteers, came up with the idea of a fundraiser to help defray expenses of Cass County 4-Hers exhibiting at the Minnesota State Fair two years ago when a mother couldn’t afford to send her son to St. Paul despite the fact that the boy won a Cass County State Fair competition.

To be eligible to exhibit at the State Fair, 4-H competitors must win with their project at the county level. Then they go through an intensive judging process at the State Fair.

“I just felt terrible. I thought everyone who works that hard to win a county level competition should be able to take their project to the State Fair,” Frederick said.

After hearing the mother’s story at the county fair in 2011, Frederick went to Bye Elyea, who was also volunteering that day, and talked about some way of helping 4-H families. Eventually, with the help of Bye’s husband, Leo Elyea, an avid golfer, they came up with the idea of a golf tournament.

Funds raised will go to families who need help with housing and meal costs at the State Fair.

To help support the fundraiser, Leo Elyea, with the help of Cass County Commissioner Jeff Peterson and others, was able to get several businesses, organizations and individuals to sponsor holes at the tournament and help pay for advertising and a lunch for players and sponsors at the Backus American Legion following the tournament. The Elyeas personally contributed toward the luncheon.
