Tigers lose in subsection softball playoffs

The sixth-ranked Pine River-Backus Tigers softball team was edged 7-5 by the No. 3 Sebeka Trojans in the first round of the North Subsection 6A playoffs on Tuesday, May 21, in Menahga.

The Tigers came out in the top of the first inning and scored four runs. Morgan Demars got on base on a double, Liz Downie walked and both had stolen bases. Tatum Sheley singled to load the bases and Autumn Ackerman followed with a two-run single to score Demars and Downie. Journee Howard then hit a sacrifice fly that brought in Sheley.

Stephanie DeGrote doubled in Ackerman for the fourth run. The Tigers didn’t score again until the top of the sixth, while Sebeka tied the game 4-4 with a run in the bottom of the third, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth. The Tigers last run came as Megan Felthous got on base when she was hit by a pitch, the Tigers next two batters got out, and Sheley singled in Felthous.

Sebeka scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. The Tigers were unable to come back from the deficit. Ackerman took the pitching loss as she struck out four, walked three, and gave up 12 hits. Demars went 2-5 while DeGrote was 2-4.

The Tigers end the season 11-4 overall.
