Tigers on 5-game winning streak
The Pine River-Backus Tigers baseball team went on a five-game win streak with their most recent win coming against the Northland Eagles 6-5 on Friday, May 17.
The Tigers are now 6-2 in the Northwoods Conference and 7-3 overall. Their final regular season games were a conference doubleheader against Nevis that was postponed from Monday, May 20, to Tuesday, May 21.
Tigers 6, Northland 5
PR-B was the first to score as they got three runs in the top of the third as Cole Larson walked, Tyler Burgoyne got on base on an error, Henry Krecklau hit a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners to scoring position, and Zach Struss brought them both in on a single. Jared Adkins hit a double to bring in Struss for the third run. Northland managed one run in the bottom of the inning to make the score 3-1.
In the top of the fourth the Tigers got Larson on base on a walk and he got to second and then third on passed balls, and Kreclau got a base hit to bring him in to make the score 4-1. Northland answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the sixth Adkins got a base hit and stole second, and Beau Howard hit a single to bring him in to make the score 5-3. Larson walked, Burgoyne walked, and Kreclau brought Larson in to make the score 6-3. Northland managed two runs in the bottom of the seventh to come within one run of the Tigers before the Tigers got them out to take the win. Zach Struss was the winning pitcher as he struck out two, didn’t walk any, and gave up seven hits.
Tigers sweep Laporte
The Tigers won both games of a home conference doubleheader against the Laporte Wildcats by scores of 21-6 and 10-0 on Thursday, May 16 in Pine River.
Laporte scored a run in the top of the first, but the Tigers answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning. The Wildcats took a 5-4 lead in the top of the second, but the Tigers quickly took over again as they scored another four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Laporte’s last run came in the top of the fourth, while the Tigers scored 10 runs in the bottom of the third and three runs in the bottom of the fourth to easily take the win. Adkins and Triston Rubner led the Tigers at bat as they each went 3-4 with a double and four RBI apiece. Nick Gravdahl went 2-4 with a double and a triple and three RBI. Howard tripled and had drove in two runs. Andrew Munsch was the winning pitcher as he struck out five, walked five, and gave up eight hits.
The Tigers blanked Laporte in the second game as Austin Smith took the win with three strike outs, two walks, and gave up three hits. The Tigers scored four runs in the first, two in the second, two in the third, and two in the fifth. Adkins led the Tigers at bat by going 2-3 with an RBI. Laporte had six errors while the Tigers played errorless ball.
Tigers sweep CL-Bena
The Tigers defeated the Cass Lake-Bena Panthers in the first game of a home conference doubleheader 4-2 on Tuesday, May 14. The Tigers scored two runs each in the bottom of the first and third innings leaving the Panthers to play catch-up, which they tried to do in the top of the fifth by scoring two runs, but the Tigers put a stop to it and won the game.
Anthony Phillipson was the winning pitcher as he struck out eight, walked two, and gave up two hits. Gravdahl had the only hit for the Tigers with a double. The rest of the Tigers’ runs came on errors and walks.
The Tigers stomped the Panthers in the second game 22-0 as Howard pitched a two-hitter, struck out nine, and walked three. The Tigers scored six runs in the first, five in the second, five in the third, one in the fourth, and five in the fifth. Rubner went 5-5 with four RBI. Munsch, Kreclau and Zach Semmler each had one hit and two RBI.
