Patriots hire new boys' basketball coach
Ben Starns was hired to be the new Pequot Lakes Patriots head boys’ basketball coach at the school board meeting on Monday, May 20, according to activities director Marc Helmrichs.
Starns will replace long-time head coach Garry Grewe, who resigned at the end of the 2012-13 season.
Starns is currently teaching biology at Pequot Lakes High School. This past season he served as a volunteer assistant coach with the boys’ program.
Prior to teaching at Pequot Lakes, Starns taught in Alexandria and Buffalo where he served as the ninth-grade coach and assistant coach respectively in those boys programs.
Starns is a Starbuck native and was a basketball standout out at Minnewaska High School. He played one year of college basketball at the University of Minnesota-Morris before transferring to North Dakota State University where he graduated in 2001.
Starns lives in Baxter with his wife, Katie, and their three-year-old daughter, Cora.
Alex Kunesh will take on the assistant (junior varsity) duties as he replaces Brian Lempola. Bret Sergent will stay on as the Patriots’ ninth-grade coach.
“We are fortunate to have someone like Coach Starns join our athletic department and keep up the strong tradition of Pequot Lakes’ basketball,” Helmrichs said. “Ben comes from a basketball family, and I am confident that he will do a great job with Patriot basketball.”
