Patriots have new softball scoreboard

The Pequot Lakes Patriots softball team dedicated their scoreboard, and then they lighted it up with 23 runs in defeating the Pillager Huskies 18-2 in five innings and topping the Pine River-Backus Tigers 5-2 in non-conference action on Thursday, May 16.

Before the doubleheader, the new electronic scoreboard dedicated to the late Bud Sergent was unveiled at the Pequot Lakes softball field.

“We thought dedicating a scoreboard at the softball field would be a great way to honor (Bud),” Patriots’ coach Bret Sergent said about his dad, who was a long-time fan of Pequot Lakes’ sports. “He was often here to not only cheer on his family members, but all the Patriots.”

Pequot Lakes finished the regular season 12-1 overall after its doubleheader at Perham rained out on Saturday, May 18. The Patriots did repeat as Mid-State Conference champions with a 9-1 record.

Top-ranked Pequot Lakes was scheduled to open the postseason against No. 8 Bemidji on Tuesday, May 21, in the Subsection 6AA quarterfinals.

Patriots 5, PR-B 2

Pequot Lakes’ pitcher Katie White tossed a three-hitter while striking out 12. White also belted a solo homer in the first inning off pitcher Autumn Ackerman. The Patriots added two runs with the aid of doubles by Kayla Miller and Jessica Kreitz.

The Patriots’ other two runs came in the third inning on an RBI double by Kreitz and a run-scoring double by Erin Rudbeck. The Tigers, who drop to 10-3 overall, scored a pair of runs in the fifth on Morgan Demars’ two-run, two-out single.

Patriots 18, Pillager 2

Against the Huskies, Pequot Lakes assumed a lead after a three-run homer by Kreitz in the first inning. The Patriots blew the game open with nine runs in the third inning for a 12-2 lead.

The big inning was highlighted by a two-run double by Kayla Miller, a three-run double by Barb Miller, and a three-run homer by White.

Pequot Lakes added six more runs in the fourth with the aid of five walks, including one by Finnish exchange student Eevi Vaahto, who earned her first varsity RBI of the season. Pinch-hitter Angela Cole also had a two-run double in the inning.

Haley Wiebolt walked and scored three times for Pequot Lakes while Kayla Miller added three hits and Kreitz had two.

Winning pitcher Lindzee Johnson allowed just two runs in the second inning to earn the victory. That inning is when Pillager had three of its five hits.
