Pequot Lakes baseball team struggling early in season
The Pequot Lakes Patriots baseball team was roughed up by the host Staples-Motley Cardinals by scores of 2-0 and 9-4 in Mid-State Conference action on Friday, May 10.
The Patriots, 0-6 in the conference and 0-8 overall, were scheduled to face Crosby-Ironton in a conference doubleheader on Tuesday, May 14, and then travel to Aitkin for a non-conference game on Thursday, May 16.
In the opener, Pequot Lakes was held to just three hits by pitcher Jalen Busker, who struck out seven and walked three to get the win.
Patriots’ pitcher Jordan Redmond held the Cardinals to just five hits but suffered the loss. Both teams had just one hit.
In the second game, S-M built a 9-0 lead before Pequot Lakes managed four runs on four hits in the seventh inning. Hunter Leslie had an RBI double and Redmond added a two-run double.
Jordan Wick earned the win while Jordan Thorson took the loss. The Cardinals improved to 7-3 in the Mid-State and 8-4 overall.
Lakers sweep Patriots
Pequot Lakes dropped both ends of a Mid-State Conference doubleheader at Detroit Lakes 4-2 and 5-0 on Tuesday, May 7.
In the opener, the Patriots were outhit 5-4 while each team committed two errors. Peter Kostecka was charged with the loss while Tyler Gebhard was the winning pitcher. Kostecka allowed four earned runs and had two strikeouts.
Hunter Leslie was 2-for-3 and drove in a run for Pequot Lakes.
In the second game, the Lakers’ Reed Johnson shut out the Patriots 5-0 to earn the pitching win. Josh Thorson was saddled with the loss for Pequot Lakes, which dropped to 0-4 in the conference and 0-6 overall.
Detroit Lakes enjoyed a 6-5 edge in hits while committing three errors compared to four for the Patriots.
