Lane, Tappe lead Patriots at True Team meet
Pequot Lakes’ juniors Vanessa Lane and Tyler Tappe both set records at the Section 8AA True Team track and field meet on Tuesday, May 7, at Detroit Lakes.
Lane broke her school record on the 200-meter dash with a 26.95-second run. Her previous record was 26.63. Lane also triumphed in the 100 dash and the long jump to help the Patriots finish fourth.
“We had a number of personal records, including Vanessa (Lane), who finally got past the 26-second barrier,” said Pequot Lakes coach Brian Kazmierczak. “The weather was perfect and kids performed well. I was happy with fourth place. We have competed well and we are in a good position going into the last couple weeks of the season.
Kazmierczak added that he likes the True Team concept for the meet.
“We get to compete and sometimes kids have to do events they might not do otherwise like Jana Hall, who was so brave to run the 3,200,” he said. “It was just great to have kids that fill in and compete.”
Tappe set a meet record in the pole vault with a 14-foot, 7-inch vault. He also won the 100 dash to help Pequot Lakes finish seventh in the boys’ standings.
“True team concept is a different scoring method where all members score points for the team,” Pequot Lakes boys’ coach Dave Guenther said of the meet, which is sponsored by the Minnesota State Track Coaches Association . “It’s a unique opportunity for the kids. The tougher competition and nice weather gave our athletes a great chance to break some personal best records.”
Guenther noted a couple admirable performances.
“Our throwers like Keegan (Johnson) and Travis (Jacobson) had good days,” he said. “John Craig had a personal best in the pole vault and Tyler Tappe broke the 8AA section record with a vault of 14-7.
“Our relays are also looking pretty decent. We will do some tweaking in the next few meets, and hopefully by subsections we will have everyone clicking.”
