Junior varsity softball team opens season

The Pequot Lakes Patriots junior varsity softball team won its first nine games of the season.

The Patriots opened with a 24-3 win over Walker-Hackensack-Akeley on April 30. Pequot Lakes freshman pitcher Kathryn Miska struck out 11 hitters in four innings while reliever Kristy Peterson allowed two hits in three innings.

Hitting highlights included: Whitney Marchwick, two hits; Taylor Crocker, three hits and 3 RBI; Madison Galligan, two triples; Emilee Buell, two hits and two RBI; and Megan Johnson, two hits.

The Patriots defeated Park Rapids 9-1 on May 2 as winning pitcher Kathryn Miska fanned 10 hitters in five innings. Offensive stars were Laura Squires with two hits and two RBI and Marchwick, Crocker and Galligan each with RBI.

In the second game against the Panthers, Pequot Lakes won 10-6 as Crocker allowed five hits in three innings and Misska struck out five in two innings. Leading the offense were Buell, Caitlyn Carkhuff and Megan Nelson each with two RBI while Marchwick and Squires each drove in one run.
