Patriots lose baseball doubleheader
The Pequot Lakes Patriots was swept by Park Rapids 9-7 and 11-7 in a Mid-State Conference doubleheader on Thursday, May 2.
The Patriots, 0-2 in the conference and 0-4 overall, were scheduled to face Detroit Lakes on Tuesday, May 7, and then play another Mid-State Conference doubleheader at Staples-Motley at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 10.
In the opener, Pequot Lakes trailed 4-2 after four innings before the Panthers scored five times in the fifth for a 7-3 lead behind four walks and singles by Austin Mesenbrink and Hunter Leslie.
The Panthers came back with five runs in the top of the sixth to assume a 9-7 lead. Patriots’ pitcher Peter Kostecka, who was relieved by Jordan Redmond in the fifth, took the loss. Park Rapids enjoyed a 10-4 edge in hits as Mesenbrink was 2-for-4 and scored twice.
In the second game, Pequot Lakes led 4-2 after four innings before the game was tied 5-5 after five innings. The Panthers put the game away with four runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to earn the sweep. The Patriots did make it close with two runs in the sixth, and had the tying run at the plate in the seventh before the rally fell short.
Mesenbrink was the losing pitcher as Park Rapids had a 10-5 edge in hits.
