Also that day, a handful of Patriots were invited to compete in the Hamline Elite Meet, including senior Tyler Tappe who set a school record with a 15-foot leap in the pole vault.

The Patriots opened the outdoor season at Pillager on Thursday, April 25, as the girls finished first behind Vanessa Lane’s meet-record time in winning the 100 dash while the boys were third.

Pequot Lakes is scheduled to compete at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 2, at Detroit Lakes, and then return to Detroit Lakes for the Section 8AA True Team meet at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7.

Hamline Elite Meet

Tappe paced the Patriots with his runner-up finish in the pole vault at the Elite Meet at Hamline University in St. Paul. One other Pequot Lakes’ boy, Travis Jacobsen, placed seventh in shot put with a toss of 49-9.5.

“Tyler (Tappe) keeps amazing us with his vaulting progression,” said Pequot Lakes’ boys’ coach Dave Guenther. “Travis (Jacobson) also did so well at his first really big meet.”

Guenther added that his squad is off to a nice start to the season.

“It has been exciting to see the kids have a lot of success in just a few meets,” he said. “It just shows that hard work at practice does pay off, and we have had plenty of time for that (with the late spring).”

Also at Hamline, the Pequot Lakes’ 4x100 girls’ relay team of Rachel Allen, Chloe Bermel, Abby Palmer and Vanessa Lane finished fifth in 50.70 seconds while Lane also placed sixth in the 100 dash in 12.63.

“Hamline was a good meet after our girls all ran at least three events on Thursday (at Pillager),” said Pequot Lakes girls’ coach Brian Kazmierczak. “Doing well in back-to-back days is very positive, especially for only working on handoffs in the parking lot on Wednesday (due to outside weather conditions).”

On Thursday, April 25, Lane won the 100-meter dash in a meet record-breaking time and participated in three other first-place finishes to lead the Pequot Lakes girls to the team title at the John Reimer Invitational in Pillager.

Lane broke the 100 dash meet record with a time of 12.34, topping the previous mark of 12.85 set in 2009. She also won the 200 dash and long jump and was on the winning 4x100 with Allen, Bermel and Palmer, who also set a school record.

Also registering first-place finishes for the Patriots were Bermel in the 400 dash, Brine-Doyle in the 3200 run and Elanor Erholtz in the shot put. Pequot also won the 200 and 400 relays.

“I was very happy,” Kazmierczak said of the meet. “Scoring 182 points is very good for a nine or 10- team meet. I think we got outside and were excited just to be running on a track.”

First-place finishers for the Pequot Lakes boys were Wurdeman in the 300 hurdles, Ryan in the 3,200 run and John Craig in the pole vault. The Patriots finished third in the boys’ standings.

It was the first outside meet for the Patriots.

“We made the most of it as our team was ready to run,” Guenther said. “Some of the performances that are being turned in at this point in the season have been remarkable.”
