Tappe vaulted 14-10 and the Pequot Lakes boys’ team tied for fifth place. He was voted the most valuable male athlete of the meet. Teammate Travis Jacobsen was runner-up in the shot put.

Palmer triple jumped 32-11 as the Patriots’ girls team finished fourth. Teammate Vanessa Lane was runner-up in the 60-meter dash and was third in the 200. Chloe Bermel finished third in the 400 dash.

“Abby came back after a difficult long jump to do very well in the triple,” Patriots girls’ coach Brian Kazmierczak said. “Vanessa was as strong as ever. She is stretching her legs to the 400 and is still learning how to run that event.

“Chloe had a great day in the 400 and the 4x200, and to top it off, making the finals in the 60 is just great for an eighth-grader.”

Kazmierczak also singled out the efforts of Ellie Erholtz in shot put, Jackie Brine-Doyle in the 3200, Corrina Ruud in high jump and Catie Ryan in the 1600.

“Catie is a great addition to our distance,” he said. “It was her first 1600 race ever and she placed (fifth) with a very good time. When she figures out the strategies of those distance races she will be a very important piece of the puzzle.”
