Junior Anthony Philipson placed first while Drey Loge was second for the Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew at the Section 8AA meet on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22-23, in Fergus Falls.

Both wrestlers advance to state individual competition, which begins for Class AA wrestlers at 9 a.m. on Friday, March 1, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Philipson, who is 30-4 overall at 106 pounds, will face sophomore Jaxon Sommers of Totino Grace, 32-8, in the first round at state while Loge, 39-1 overall at 145 pounds, opens against Bryon senior Brett Bradford, 37-5.

Two Road Crew juniors just missed a trip to state as Justin Mackenthun, 182, and heavyweight Jared Adkins both lost championship matches at the section meet, and were later defeated in the true-second matches.

Philipson, currently rated No. 8 in the state, opened the section meet with a bye. He then registered two quick pins before wrapping up a title with a 15-0 win over seventh-grader Josh Bernier of Thief River Falls.

Drey Loge won his first two matches with quick pins before dominating for a 15-0 decision. He then suffered his first loss of the season in the championship match by a 5-1 score against Detroit Lakes’ sophomore Parker Jackson, who improved to 39-3. Loge came back to defeat Colin Neitzke of Perham in the true-second match.

Mackenthun won his first with a pin at 1:52 and then earned 10-0 and 3-1 decisions. He then wrestled for first place, but lost 3-2 against Park Rapids junior John Kyllonen. Wrestling for true second, Mackenthun lost another close match 7-6 to Gus Makovsky of Fergus Falls.

Jared Adkins, who finishes 29-10, won his first three matches with pins in 3:43, 2:35, and 2:58. Adkins was then pinned by Chris Kucera of Thief River Falls in the championship match. Wrestling for true second, Adkins lost to James Huwe of Detroit Lakes, who Adkins had defeated earlier this month.

Other Road Crew results from the section meet included: Spencer Richards, 113, losing his second match, but coming back with a pin in 39 seconds. Richards then lost 2-0 to Alex Engelding of Staples-Motley, and came back to place fifth with a 6-3 win over Colton Weiland of Crookston.

Freshman Nate Adkins opened in the 120 division with a pin at 3:55 before defeating Chase Curtis 3-0. He then dropped 3-2 and 12-6 decisions before taking fifth with a 7-0 win over Curtis. Adkins finished 22-10.

Sophomore Lucus McCoy, who usually wrestles on junior varsity, did not win at 126 while Nick Gravdahl, a sophomore at 132, won his first match by fall in 1:18. Gravdahl then lost to Austin Hjelle, before bouncing back with a pin at 1:22. Gravdahl later wrestled Ben Baumgartner, who was 32-2, in the fifth-place match and dropped a 12-9 decision.

Junior Jace Loge, 138, started off with a bye before losing to Mason Swengarden. Loge then registered pins in 1:52 and 32 seconds before losing 6-1 against Nathan Mertan from Crookston. Loge then lost the fifth-place match 7-4 to finish 23-16 overall.

Junior Ozzy Miller, 152, started off with a pin at 23 seconds. He then lost his next match, but came back with a pin at 13 seconds. He was then defeated 9-2 by Alex Bode of Fosston-Bagley. Miller finishes 18-17 overall.

Joe Harrison, who has been wrestling most of the year on junior varsity, did not place at 160.

Dillon Nichols, 170, lost his first match, but advanced with a bye before losing to Luke Edlund 7-3. Codel Roeder, 195, and senior Kurt Kent, both did not place.
