Patriot girls pound Bagley 80-55
The Pequot Lakes girls’ basketball team has won six of its last eight games to finish the regular season with a 17-9 record.
Pequot Lakes defeated Bagley 80-55 on Thursday, Feb. 21, and downed Cold Spring Rocori 94-84 on Tuesday, Feb. 19, in a pair of non-conference games. The second-seeded Patriots are scheduled to host No. 7 Roseau in the North Subsection 8AA quarterfinals on Thursday, Feb. 28. The subsection semifinals are 2:45 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at Bemidji State University.
Against Bagley, Kayla Miller had a team-high 17 points while Vanessa Lane and Katie White each had 14 points. Lane also had eight steals. Bagley was led by Kari Skersick with 25.
Bagley enjoyed its last lead at 6-5 before two baskets by Lane put the Patriots ahead for good. The Flyers did get within striking distance behind the shooting of Skersick as they cut the deficit to 26-20. But that’s when Pequot Lakes went on a 9-0 run. The Patriots extended the advantage to 35-20 with 2:45 remaining in the half after a three-point basket by White.
Nevis came back with a basket, but the Patriots closed out the first half with eight straight points for a 46-26 lead at the break.
Pequot Lakes rattled off 13 consecutive points for a 58-25 lead to open the second half. The Patriots substituted freely as the reserves scored the final 16 points. Laura Squires scored six of those points as the host team won by 25 points.
“We got off to a bit of a slow start as shots that we usually make were not falling,” said Pequot Lakes coach Jon Dale, “but we shot well after that, and had the big run to start the second half to put the game away.”
The Flyers were coached by Brandon Schwegel, a Pine River-Backus graduate and the son of PR-B girls’ basketball coach Randy Schwegel.
“We kept it close for awhile, but (Pequot Lakes) had nice runs at the end of the first half and the start of the second half,” said Schwegel, whose team is 13-12 overall. “(Pequot Lakes) has a tougher schedule than we do.”
