Rangers edge Pequot Lakes girls on Monday

Chelsea Bonsante scored 29 points to lead the host Crosby-Ironton Rangers past the Pequot Lakes Patriots 77-72 in Mid-State Conference girls’ basketball action on Monday, Feb. 18,

The Patriots, 6-4 in the Mid-State and 16-8 overall, were scheduled to end the regular season at Cold Spring Rocori on Tuesday, Feb. 19, and at Bagley on Thursday, Feb. 21, in a pair of non-conference games. Pequot Lakes will likely host a North Subsection 8AA playoff game on Thursday, Feb. 28.

The game was tied 38-38 at halftime and 72-72 at the end of regulation before the Rangers scored all five points of the overtime.

Kayla Miller led six scorers with 21 points for the Patriots, who had won four of their last five games. Vanessa Lane added 20 points, Jessica Kreitz followed with 15 points and Katie White scored 10.

Meredith Silgen scored 15 points and Shannon Lundgren 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Rangers, who improve to 4-6 in the conference and 12-13 overall.

Miller had a game-high 21 points while Lane had 20 points and 15 rebounds as Pequot Lakes beat the visiting Thunderhawks in a non-conference matchup on Thursday, Feb. 14.

“(Grand Rapids) was ranked in the top 10 of Class 3A earlier in the year, but we had outstanding efforts from everyone in one of our better games of the year,” said Pequot Lakes coach Jon Dale.

The Patriots grabbed a quick 4-0 lead on a pair of baskets by Lane, but the Thunderhawks rallied for a 9-7 advantage. It would be the last time that Grand Rapids would lead as Katie White’s 3-point shot gave the hosts a 10-9 lead.

The visitors only trailed 25-20 with six minutes left in the opening half when White drilled another 3-point shot. Abby Palmer hit a short jumper and had a steal and layup to help the Patriots extend the lead to 34-24. Pequot Lakes then scored the next five points when Jessica Kreitz passed to Lane for a layup and Brittny Bzdok added a layup and free throw.

The Patriots, who led 39-29 at intermission, extended the advantage to 48-31 to start the second half. Grand Rapids did rally midway through the half and cut the deficit to 52-46. Pequot Lakes then blew the game open with a 21-4 run to close out the game, with Miller scoring 14 of those points

It was senior night and seniors Kreitz and Palmer received gifts from teammates.

White added 13 for the Patriots, who have won four of their last five games.

Patriots 75, C-I 63

Miller had 18 points, and six assists to lead Pequot Lakes to a Mid-State Conference victory over the visiting Rangers on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

The first half was tied five times before the half ended with the Patriots holding a 30-24 lead after a layup by Miller and a 3-point basket by Haley Wiebolt.

Lane went to the bench after her fourth foul with 12:44 remaining, and C-I managed to tie it at 46. But Pequot Lakes regained the lead on a 3-point basket by White.

The Patriots extended the lead to 59-52 with 4:45 remaining, but the Rangers would not go away as Lane fouled out and then Chelsey Bonsante nailed a 3-point shot to cut the deficit to 68-63 with 1:40 left. Pequot Lakes did finish strong with the final seven points to clinch the win.

“It hurt us when Vanessa (Lane) got into foul trouble, and we had a lot of turnovers,” said coach Dale, “but (C-I) played us tough.”

Kreitz added 15 points and Lane 14. Lauren Peterson and Meredith Silgen each had 13 points for the Rangers.
