Tigers trounce N-K, Blackduck, Pillager

The visiting Pine River-Backus Tigers girls’ basketball team easily handled the Northome-Kelliher Mustangs 84-48 to remain unbeaten in the Northwoods Conference on Saturday, Feb. 9.

The Tigers quickly tied the game 2-2 as Tatum Sheley made a basket for her first of 35 points in the game. Northome scored a free throw, Brittany Kelley answered her first points out of 24 total points for the game, Sheley drained a three, and Megan Felthous put in a free throw to give PR-B the lead 8-3.

Sheley drained yet another three before Northome finally managed to score with 13:23 left in the half. Felthous put in two points off a rebound, Northome scored two points, and Sheley put in two free throws to make the score 15-7. The Tigers continued to stay 8-9 points ahead of Northome and were nine points ahead at half time with a score of 34-25.

PR-B dominated the second half 50-23. Sheley led all scorers with 35 points, six steals, four rebounds, and three assists. Kelley had 24 points, four rebounds, one block, one steal, and one assist. Felthous finished with 15 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Autumn Ackerman had five points, six rebounds, one block, and one steal. And Kendra Brasel had five points, three steals, three assists, and one rebound.

Tigers 98, Blackduck 35

The Tigers came within two points of hitting 100 points in a game Friday, Feb. 8, in Blackduck as they easily came away with the win 98-35.

Sheley and Felthous were on fire in the first half as they combined for 46 of PR-B’s 66 points in the first half. Felthous had 19 points in the first half which was how many points Blackduck had as a team in the first half. In the second half PR-B outscored the Drakes 32-16.

Sheley again led all scorers with 31 points, six steals, four assists, and three rebounds. Felthous had 23 points, seven rebounds, five steals, and four assists. Ackerman finished with 13 points, eight steals, seven rebounds, four blocks, and four assists. Kelley had 12 points, three rebounds, three steals, and one assist. Brasel had eight points, six assists, three steals, and one rebound. Nicole Arends had four points and one assist. Jess Hanneken had three points. Journee Howard had two points, four steals, one rebound, and one assist, and Liz Downie added two points.

Tigers 86, Pillager 34

Pillager was the first to score against visiting PR-B on Tuesday, Feb. 6, but the Tigers quickly came roaring back as they scored six points before the Huskies could score again.

Pillager scored four points to tie it, Kelley put in two points, and the Huskies hit a three to make the score 9-8. Sheley answered for the Tigers with a three, and PR-B scored four more points to lengthen the Tigers’ score 15-9. Pillager got another three pointer and the Tigers went on a 12 point run to make the score 27-12 with eight and a half minutes left in the first half. PR-B led 51-21 at the half.

In the second half the Tigers outscored the Huskies 35-13. Six of the Tigers’ players got in on the scoring in the second half while only two of Pillager’s players were able to score in the second half. Kelley led all scorers with 21 points, six rebounds, one steal, and one block. Felthous had 18 points, five steals, and three rebounds. Sheley had a double-double with 16 points, 10 assists, six steals, and one rebound. Ackerman had 15 points, four steals, four blocks, three rebounds, and one assist. Howard finished with 12 points, eight rebounds, five steals, and two assists. Brasel had two points, four assists, three rebounds, three steals, and one block, and Downie added two points and one rebound.

The Tigers, 12-0 in the conference and 17-3 overall, are scheduled to host Park Rapids on Thursday, Feb. 14, and Ogilvie at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15.
