Pequot Lakes JV teams compete

The Pequot Lakes Patriots junior varsity girls’ basketball team lost 71-53 in a free-scoring game against the Staples-Motley Cardinals on Thursday, Feb. 7.

The Cardinals, who led 33-24 at the half, were led by Chelcee Shereck with 18 points. Catie Ryan scored 11, Emilee Buell and Morgan Lohmiller each had nine, Barb Miller eight, Kelsey Hart six, Jessica Faacks four, and Meghan Nelson, Alex Nelson and Laura Squires each had two.

“We had balanced scoring,” said Pequot Lakes JV coach Kate Dale, “but we missed had too many turnovers, and missed way too many easy shots.”

On Tuesday, Feb. 5, the Pequot Lakes junior varsity crushed Wadena-Deer Creek 52-30 after building a 31-14 halftime lead.

Faacks paced the Patriots with 14 points while Hart and Ryan each had 12, Caitlin Carkhuff six, Buell and Squires each had three and Meghan Nelson two.

“The girls really played well, especially Jessica (Faacks), Kelsey (Hart) and Catie (Ryan),” Dale said. “I was able to substitute a lot of players.”

Junior high girls sweep S-M

At Eagle View Elementary School, the Pequot Lakes seventh grade girls defeated S-M 35-16 after leading 14-5 at the half. Karli Skog led the Patriots with 11 points while Kristen Skog had 10.

The Pequot Lakes eighth-grade girls beat the Cardinals 39-26 after leading 19-10 at the break. Sam Littman had 22 points, and made nine of 11 free throws, to lead the Patriots while teammate Corina Rudd had 14.

JV boys top Roseau

The Pequot Lakes junior varsity and freshmen boys’ basketball teams both defeated Roseau on Saturday, Feb. 9.

The junior varsity defeated the Rams 69-44 after leading just 32-29 on a 3-point basket by Connor Davich at the intermission buzzer. The Patriots started the second half with a 17-0 run as Hunter Larson had nine of the points. Pequot Lakes extended the lead to 60-33 as Jon Bocklund came off the bench to score six points. C.J. Borleis led the Patriots with 18 points, Davich added 16, Larson 12, Bocklund six, Elverum four and Hunter Goerges and Jackson Goerges each had three and Lucas Mumm two.

On Friday, Feb. 8, Pequot Lakes lost to the Crookston junior varsity squad 50-47. Borleis again had 18 points while Jack Kreitz added 15, Davich and Jackson Goerges each had five, Elverum two and Jared Hutchinson and Mumm each had one.

The JV team beat Staples-Motley 59-51 on Tuesday, Feb. 5, after leading 25-24 at the half. The Patriots did not surrender the lead as 3-point shots by Mumm and Jackson Goerges gave Pequot Lakes a 53-47 advantage. The Patriots then put the game away from the charity stripe in the final minutes.

Borleis had a team-high 11 points while Larson and Kreitz each had 10, Elverum eight, Jackson Goerges seven, Davich five, and Mumm and Bocklund four each.

“It was a close game the whole way,” said Pequot Lakes coach Brian Lempola. “We had balanced scoring, but too many turnovers.”

Freshmen boys split

The Pequot Lakes freshmen defeated Roseau 49-40 on Feb. 9, behind a season-high 22 points by Gage Westlund. Josh Buell added 10 points, Connor Dale nine, and Jordan Oaks and Cody Huss each with four for the Patriots, who led 30-24 at the half.

The freshmen were defeated by Crookston 58-32 on Feb. 8, as the Patriots got off to a slow start and trailed 28-10 at the half. Buell finished with 13 points, Westlund added eight, Huss and Levi Palmer each had four, and Dale and Dylan Walburg had two.

Against Staples-Motley on Feb. 5, the freshmen assumed a 25-17 lead at the break only to be outscored in the second half and lose 50-48. Westlund led the Patriots with 19 points while Buell had 13, Oaks and Hunter Goerges each had six, and Huss and Jack Harguth each added two. Lucas Jimenez had 14 points for the Cardinals.
