Road Crew win Mid-State title

Drey Loge earned his 125th career win and captured the 145-pound championship to help the Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew claim the Mid-State Conference title on Friday, Jan. 25. Loge was chosen most valuable wrestler for the conference.

The Road Crew had four other champions - Anthony Philipson, Nate Adkins, Nick Gravdahl and Justin Mackenthun.

PL/PR-B finished with 218 points, followed by Detroit Lakes with 213, Staples-Motley 95, Crosby-Ironton 94, Park Rapids 77 and Wadena-Deer Creek 75.5.

The Road Crew was scheduled to face Grand Rapids on Tuesday, Jan. 29, and then compete at the W-DC Invitational on Tuesday, Feb. 5.

Philipson defeated Caleb Kreitter of C-I for the 106 title, Nate Adkins placed first over Nolan Booge of PR at 120, and Nick Gravdahl defeated Devin Barthel of W-DC for first place at 132. Drew Loge defeated Parker Jackson of Detroit Lakes, who is ranked No. 8 in the state, on way to winning the title. Mackenthun defeated John Kyllonen of PR for the 182 title.

Ozzie Miller was defeated by Jarrett Nosal of DL and finished second at 152. At 160, Dillon Nichols placed a respectable second behind champion Brandon Dahring of DL at 160. Jared Adkins lost to James Huwe of DL for second place at 285.

Spencer Richards defeated Payton Jackson of DL for third place at 113. Triston Rubner placed third over Nathan Francis of DL at 126, and Jace Loge defeated Justin Dravis of Park Rapids for third at 138. Kyle Jordan took third at 170. Cadel Roeder, 195, and Kurt Kent, 220, both came in third.

Road Crew 45, NYM 24

The Road Crew improved to 11-2 overall with a win over New York Mills at Pequot Lakes High School. Drey Loge improved to 24-0 on the season with a 3-0 decision over Kacee Skoog at 152 pounds.

Kyle Jordan’s pin at 170 pounds was a key win, according to Road Crew head coach Travis Hoffarth. Spencer Richards, Nick Gravdahl and Jace Loge also won by pins.

Spencer Richards (113) was ahead by only one point going into the third period. He was in the up position when he turned his opponent onto his back for a nice tight pin. Nate Adkins was all business and got a quick takedown on way to a win. Gravdahl wrestled against Shane Novak, last year’s state champion at 113, and was pinned. Rubner came back with an escape and a takedown in the third period to win 3-1. Gravdahl put his opponent on his back for a third-period win.

One of the best matches had Jace Loge managed to win by fall. Drey Loge defeated Kacee Skoog 3-0 to give the Road Crew a 33-6 lead.

Miller trailed by one point going into the third period, and eventually lost 3-2. Jordan was ahead 4-2 in the second period when he went into a tight fireman’s for a pin. Mackenthun held his own as he went against No. 9 rated Noah Pesola. He went the distance, but lost 8-5. Roeder was pinned at 195, and Kurt Kent lost to the No. 6 rated Max Carlson at 220. Jared Adkins won by forfeit at heavyweight.

“We got some bonus points which really helped us,” said Road Crew coach Travis Hoffarth. “We are getting ready for conference and sections-the wrestlers are putting in a lot of work.”

JV wrestles NYM

The Pequot Lakes junior varsity squad also wrestled against New York Mills on Thursday, Jan. 24.

Chris Foster showing good wrestling skills was ahead before he won with a pin. Going into the third period with one-point lead Peter Koering went hip to hip with seven seconds remaining to cradle his opponent for a pin. Devyn Richards went from a reversal to a pin. Jace Leabo had 10 takedown points, a reversal and three near-fall points to win 15-7. Dillon Nichols won with a pin in the second period.

Justin Neumann also won with a pin in the second period. John Urseth, Lucus McCoy and Lance Squires all won their contests.
