The Pequot Lakes Patriots boys’ basketball team lost to visiting Detroit Lakes 59-49 in a Mid-State Conference game on Tuesday, Jan. 22.
Jordan Redmond led Pequot Lakes with 19 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks. But the Patriots’ second-highest scorer, Travis Jacobson, was sidelined with a severely sprained ankle.
A pair of baskets by Redmond gave Pequot Lakes a 6-5 lead, but the Lakers went on an 11-1 run to build a 16-8 lead with 11:35 left in the first half. The Patriots cut the deficit to 19-17 with 6:20 left after two driving layups by Redmond and a rebound basket by Wes Mumm.
The Lakers stretched the lead to 25-19, and maintained a 29-24 lead at intermission despite 14 points by Redmond.
The second half started with a display of three-point shooting by both teams as Detroit Lakes’ Derek Long and Brett Peterson both swished a pair of 3-point baskets. The Patriots’ John Craig later drained a 3-point shot to cut the deficit to 37-33. The Lakers extended the lead to 52-41 with 4:08 left, and they maintained that advantage as Detroit Lakes’ Ryan Cihak made four straight free throws to offset a 3-point basket by Tyler Tappe.
Kirk McLeod led Detroit Lakes with 22 points. The Patriots did enjoy a 25-20 edge in rebounds.
“We missed Jacobson, but our guys gave an inspired effort,” said Pequot Lakes coach Garry Grewe. “We never gave up, and played hard until the end.”
The Patriots, 4-3 in the conference and 6-9 overall, were postponed at Pelican Rapids on Tuesday, Jan. 29, and that game will be played on Feb.16. The Patriots are scheduled to host Park Rapids at 7:15 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1.
JV, freshmen both lose
The Pequot Lakes junior varsity and freshmen teams both lost to Detroit Lakes on Jan. 22.
The Patriots’ junior varsity got off to a slow start, trailing 35-17 at the half, and lost 56-37. C.J. Borleis led Pequot Lakes with 12 points, Connor Davich added seven, Lucas Mumm and Brandon Hehir each had four, Hunter Larson had three, Jack Kreitz, Jon Bocklund and Erick Elverum each had two, and Austin Anderson added a free throw.
The freshmen also started slowly against Detroit Lakes, and trailed 17-6 at intermission on way to a 45-25 defeat. Gage Westlund led the Patriots with 10 points, Josh Buell added eight, Hunter Goerges five, and Cody Huss two.
