7th, 8th grade boys win tournament

The Pequot Lakes seventh- and eighth-grade boys’ basketball teams finished 3-0 to win titles at a four-team round-robin tournament on Saturday, Jan. 19.

The eighth-grade squad defeated Crosby-Ironton 38-36, downed Wadena-Deer Creek 43-30 and topped Pierz 50-28.

Against C-I, Kirk Johnson led Pequot Lakes with 14 points, Jack Kieffer and Andy Voges each had six, Casey Welsh and Hunter Clement each had five. The Patriots then beat W-DC as Welsh scored 13, Kieffer nine and Clement four. In the title game against Pierz, Welsh netted 20 points, Kirk Johnson 12, Kieffer nine and Ben Nelson six.

“We had lost our last four games, but the kids really played well today,” said Pequot Lakes’ eighth-grade coach Garry Phelps.

The seventh-grade team didn’t have much trouble as they beat the Rangers 67-8, dropped the Wolverines 60-20 and pounded Pierz 49-12.

Against C-I, Zach Senst scored 12 points, Zach Sjoblad added 10, Austin Young eight and Nathan Trout seven. In beating W-DC, Senst had 12, Chase Larson added 11, Sjoblad and Sam Scheuss each with eight, and Jack White five. Pequot Lakes then won the title over Pierz by starting off with an 18-0 lead. Adam Casanova scored 12 points for the Patriots while Larson added 10 and Sjoblad had eight.

“The kids are playing some good basketball,” said Pequot Lakes’ seventh-grade coach Kyle Spray. “They really played well together today.”
