Stone second at alpine skiing event

Despite straying off the course on both of her runs, Pequot Lakes senior Savannah Stone placed second with a combined time of 1:16.83 to lead the Brainerd Warriors to a runner-up finish at the Moose Mountain Invitational on Thursday, Jan. 10.

Signe Larson of Cook County was the individual champion in 1:10.97. Alex Stone, Savannah’s sister and also a Pequot Lakes student, placed fourth in 1:19.83 despite skiing with a broken thumb.

Cook County won the six-team girls’ title with 156 points while the Warriors finished with 149.

Cook County also triumphed in the boys’ meet while Brainerd was fifth. The Warriors’ Tristan Elsenpeter, a Pequot Lakes student, finished 34th in 1:38.16.

In the junior varsity meet, the Warriors’ Maddie Olson, also a Pequot Lakes skier, finished third in 1:45.55.

Brainerd, which was scheduled to ski at Powder Ridge in Kimball on Tuesday, Jan. 15, will compete at Giants Ridge in Biwabik on Saturday, Jan. 19.
