Lightning boys split two games

Ben Moe netted two goals to push Northern Lakes Lightning past Achiever Northeast Academy 4-2 in a non-conference boys' hockey game on Monday, Jan. 14.

Moe has scored seven goals in less than a week to earn this week's Lake Country Echo Athlete of the Week award.

Aspen Florey opened up the scoring for the lightning with a goal in the second period to tie it 1-1.

Kegan Couture added two assists. Goaltender Mitch Stangel stopped eight of the 10 shots he faced and picked up the win.

The Lightning, 6-7 overall, is scheduled to host Park Rapids on Thursday, Jan. 17.

Aspen Florey and Moe each scored a pair of goals for Northern Lakes in a victory victory over the winless Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels in a non-conference action on Thursday, Jan. 10, at Breezy Point Arena.

Nick Olson, Nick Blanchette, Jake Hyytinen, Kyle Narveson, Austin Mesenbrink, Alex Galligan and Derek French also scored goals for the Lightning while Mesenbrink and Hunter Leslie each had two assists.

Stangel saved seven shots for Northern Lakes.

Apollo 8, Lightning 5

Moe notched a hat trick, but Northern Lakes came up short in a non-conference loss to St. Cloud Apollo on Tuesday, Jan. 8. It’s believed to be the first appearance for the Eagles at Breezy Point Arena.

Apollo led 5-2 after the first period, but Northern Lakes cut the deficit with a pair of unanswered goals by Moe and Blanchette in the second session. The Eagles then iced the win with three goals in the third.

Blanchette and French also scored for the Lightning while Couture had three assists and Narveson had two. Stangel made 36 saves. Winning goaltender Nick Althaus stopped 25 shots.
