Cass Lake-Bena defeated the host Pine River-Backus Tigers boys’ basketball team 77-43 on Tuesday, Jan. 8.

PR-B had an excellent performance by senior point guard Beau Howard, who had 20 points on a nine for 17 night from the field, but it wasn’t enough to beat a tough CL-B team.

CL-B assumed a lead in the first half with solid performances by Jordan Collins who contributed 15 points in the opening half. Mason Kingbird had 11 points for CL-B as well in the first half. Those two players were able to score as many points as the entire PR-B team in the half, as CL-B built a 40-26 advantage at intermission.

PR-B was able to get an advantage from behind the arc in the first half though, finding success on four three-pointers compared with three successful shots for CL-B. The bulk of the scoring for PR-B in the half was by Howard, as he accumulated half of the Tigers’ points with 13.

One downfall of PR-B was an inability to get to the line early in the game, with CL-B taking an advantage in trips to the line with nine compared to no chances for the Tigers. CL-B did convert on seven of those attempts.

The Tigers have gone into the locker room at greater deficits this season and felt they had a chance, trailing by 14 points.

The second half would prove to be much of the same as the Tigers were outscored 33-17 in the final 18 minutes. PR-B was able to get to the foul line in the second half, getting there 10 times, but were only able to capitalize on four of those opportunities. Meanwhile, CL-B went seven for 10 on their attempts.

Both CL-B and PR-B played unselfishly as eight players recorded a basket for each team. Whenever the Tigers showed some momentum, CL-B was able to answer back and maintain a comfortable lead. When the final buzzer sounded, PR-B was soundly defeated 77-43.

Scoring Summary: PR-B was led by Beau Howard with 20 points. He made an impressive seven of 12 from two-point range. Freshman forward Zach Struss had eight points going three for eight from the field and two for four from the line. Travon Pederson added four points, with one successful three-pointer on seven attempts behind the arc. Hank Raph, Konrad Bueckers and Cody Mager each contributed three points for the Tigers, and Tony Pederson had two.

CL-B was led by Jordan Collins, who had 26 points and was very consistent, putting up double digits in both halves, 15 and 11 points respectively. Mason Kingbird finished with 13 points while Josh LaDude had 11 points, and Alvin Wind and Darman Kingford each had 9 points.
