Tigers down Drakes, remain undefeated in conference

The Pine River-Backus Tigers girls’ basketball team remained undefeated in Northwoods Conference action when they easily defeated the Blackduck Drakes 95-28 on Thursday, Jan. 3.

The Tigers won the tip and were the first to score as Brittany Kelley put in a layup off an assist by Megan Felthous. Blackduck scored three points just 15 seconds later, but Kelley answered with two more points off an assist by Autumn Ackerman. Blackduck then put in two more points for a 5-4 lead. Kendra Basel put the Tigers ahead 6-5 with a basket off an assist by Kelley, but Blackduck rallied with a basket for the lead. The Drakes didn’t score for the next five minutes while PR-B went on a 27-point run with 10 points by Felthous, seven from Ackerman, six from Brasel, and two each from Kelley and Tatum Sheley.

Blackduck finally managed to score with just under nine minutes left in the half. The Tigers got two points, and Blackduck made two free throws to make it 35-11. PR-B went on an 8-0 run with six points from Kelley and two from Felthous, Blackduck scored for the last time in the opening half, but the Tigers finished out the half with a 16-point run to make it 59-13 at the break.

The Tigers outscored the Drakes 36-15 in the second half. Kelley led PR-B with 27 points, three steals, two rebounds, two assists and two blocks; Felthous had 22 points, five assists, three steals and one block; and Ackerman had a double-double with 13 points, 10 steals, six rebounds, five assists and one block.

Other top scorers for the Tigers were Sheley with 11 points, eight assists, five steals, and three rebounds; Brasel finished with 10 points, three assists and a steal; Nicole Arends had eight points, one steal and one assist; Journee Howard had two points, three rebounds and two steals; and Brooke Richards finished with two points and one steal.

The Tigers, 5-0 in the conference and 7-2 overall, are scheduled to host Isle on Thursday, Jan. 10, travel to Sebeka on Friday, Jan. 11, and then host Clearbrook-Gonvic on Monday, Jan. 14.
