Patriots lose to Cardinals in OT
The Pequot Lakes Patriots couldn’t hold a 29-21 halftime lead in a 61-58 Mid-State Conference overtime loss to Staples-Motley on Friday, Jan. 4.
The Patriots, 4-6 overall, were scheduled to host three straight games - Crosby-Ironton on Tuesday, Jan. 8, Grand Rapids on Thursday, Jan. 10, and Brainerd on Monday, Jan. 14.
“We had too many turnovers to win a game like this,” said Pequot Lakes coach Garry Grewe, whose squad committed 10 turnovers early in the second half as the Cardinals rallied. “We certainly didn’t get many calls to go our way, and both (Jordan) Redmond and (Brett) Peterson got in foul trouble.”
The Patriots took an early 15-12 lead after baskets by Keegan Johnson and Redmond. Pequot Lakes then grabbed the halftime lead on three baskets each by Redmond and Travis Jacobson.
S-M started the second half with a 10-0 run, and got the lead back at 31-29 on Kyle Jansson’s three-point basket. Redmond’s three-point play put the Patriots back on top, but the senior then picked up his fourth foul with 11:36 still left in the half. Two minutes later, Peterson was whistled for his fourth foul, and Pequot Lakes was in trouble despite leading.
The Patriots assumed a 51-47 lead late in the second half after a jumper by John Craig and a layup by Wes Mumm. The Cardinals took advantage of turnovers to take a 52-51 lead on a 3-point shot by Seth Auger.
Peterson’s free throw tied it in the final seconds to send the game into overtime. S-M took a 56-54 lead in the extra session when Brian Huber tipped in a rebound. A pair of free throws by Jansson gave the Cardinals a four-point lead, but in the final minute Jacobson had a basket and Redmond nailed two free throws to tie 58-58 with 27 seconds left.
Huber got loose for a layup with 17 ticks remaining to give S-M a 60-58 lead. Jalen Busker added a free throw with 2.8 seconds left after Redmond fouled out and the Cardinals came away winners. Redmond and Jacobson each had 19 points while Busker had 21 to lead S-M.
