Road Crew split at Perham
The Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus Road Crew wrestling team defeated Thief River Falls 46-30, but lost to the No. 12 rated Perham Yellowjackets 42-27 at a triangular in Perham on Friday, Dec. 21.
PL/PRB, 8-2 overall, are scheduled to compete at the Staples-Motley triangular at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 3.
Road Crew 46, TRF 30
Against the Prowlers, which is rated Lean and Mean (honorable mention) in the Guillotine poll, the Road Crew grabbed a 12-0 lead as both Isaac Manthel (106 pounds) and Spencer Richards (113) both received byes.
Nate Adkins (120) dominated his opponent and won 11-3. Brandon Mager then lost by fall, and teammate Triston Rubner was defeated 7-2. Both Jace Loge (138) and Drey Loge (145) received byes before Nick Gravdahl (152) went in for a quick takedown and a pin at 1:48.
Trevor Johnson, 160, fought off being pinned in the first period, but was eventually pinned in the third against TRF’s Nate Holecek, a top-rated wrestler. Kyle Jordan (170) had his opponent on his back for most of two periods and won with a pin at 3:27. Ozzy Miller then lost 18-6 against No. 5 rated Holden Nelson. Cadel Roeder (195) was pinned, but Kurt Kent received a bye.
Perham 42, Road Crew 27
The was a big match as the Road Crew placed second to the Yellowjackets in last season’s section team tournament.
On Dec. 21, Manthel started off with a pin at 1:55 but Phillipson lost in a 4-2 contest against Sam Pirrotta. Mager was pinned, but Nate Adkins came back with a pin at 3:33. Rubner won with a quick pin at 39 seconds. Jace Loge went into overtime but lost 6-4. Drey Loge went against the No. 9 rated wrestler and 2-0 with a reversal in the third period. Gravdahl trailed going into the third period when he got a takedown, was then reversed, but got a reversal before falling short and lost. Johnson was pinned in the second period, and the match was tied 21-21.
Jordan got the first takedown, but it was a reversal by his opponent in the third period that resulted in a 6-4 defeat. Miller, Roeder and Kent all were pinned. Jared Adkins continued his steady improvement this season with a pin at 59 seconds. It wasn’t enough as the Road Crew fell for only the second time in 10 matches.
Some of the top individual records for the Road Crew at the holiday break include: Drey Loge 19-0; Philipson 13-2; Nate Adkins 12-6, Rubner 14-4, Jace Loge and Jared Adkins 14-7 and Gravdahl 10-7.
JV wins for Road Crew
Road Crew junior varsity wrestlers with wins against Crosby-Ironton and Royalton on Thursday, Dec. 20 included: Peter Koering had two wins by scores of 10-4 and 14-8 while Justin Neuman got a pin. Both Darion Anderson and Desi Sonenstahl got pins in the first period.
Devyn Richards got a pin in the third period while Joe Harrison got his pin in the first period. Darion Anderson won with a pin after a quick takedown in the first period. Cody France dominated his contest then pinned his opponent. Richards Jace Leabo, Ryan Visser and Dallin Sonenstahl all won with first-period pins.
On Dec. 21, the junior varsity faced Perham and Thief River Falls. Anderson had two takedowns and went for a pin in the first period. Anthony Kegg won 4-3, Koering and Evan Gravdahl got first-period pins. Mike Hudak dominated with takedowns and near falls to win 13-0.
Dallin Sonenstahl won 10-4 with Luke Sescher getting a pin at 55 seconds. Leabo got a pin at 2:19 while Justin Neumann, Dillon Nichols and Chris Foster all won by fall. Koering won 8-4 while Anderson had a pin at 2:07. Joe Harrison ended the day with a pin at 4:35.
