PR-B girls' win season opener

The Pine River-Backus Tigers girls’ varsity basketball team defeated the Cass Lake-Bena Panthers 81-22 in a blowout in Cass Lake for their season opener on Thursday, Nov. 29.

The Tigers won the tip and immediately scored as Brittany Kelley put in an easy layup. Kendra Brasel put in another layup less than a minute later off an assist by Journee Howard. Howard put in two more points for the Tigers before the Panthers managed to score their first points on a 3-pointer. The Tigers went on a 10-point run before Cass Lake could score again, including four points by Autumn Ackerman, four points by Kelley, and two points by Brasel.

The Tigers assumed a 43-16 lead at intermission. PR-B then outscored Cass Lake-Bena 38-6 in the second half. The Tigers were the first to score again in the second half as Kelley drained a 3-pointer. Before Cass Lake-Bena could respond, the Tigers had scored 10 more points, including six more from Kelley, two from Megan Felthous, and two from Ackerman.

Kelley outscored the Cass Lake team as she finished the game with 28 points. She also had six rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks. Ackerman had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. She also had six steals, four assists, and four blocks. Felthous finished just shy of a double-double with 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Brasel had eight points, six assists, three steals, and one rebound. Howard had seven points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Nicole Arends had six points, two steals, and one rebound. Brooke Richards finished with two points, two rebounds, and one steal. Megan Porta scored her first varsity point as she added a free throw for the Tigers, and also had three rebounds, three steals, one assist, and one block. Jess Hanneken aided the Tigers with two defensive rebounds.

PR-B is scheduled to play conference games at home against the Laporte Wildcats on Thursday, Dec. 6, and the Northome-Kelliher Mustangs on Saturday, Dec. 8.
