PL youth teams play

The Pequot Lakes junior varsity boys’ basketball team defeated Deer River 67-48 on Thursday, Nov. 30.

The Patriots grabbed an early 16-6 lead. Jackson Goerges later hit a 10-foot shot and a three-pointer to make it 31-22 at the break. Brandon Hehir scored eight of the first 10 points of the second half to expand the lead to 41-27.

“I thought we really played well for our first game,” said Pequot Lakes coach Brian Lempola. “We shot well, and our two freshmen (C.J. Borleis and Hunter Larson) did a real good job for their first JV action.”

Hehir led Pequot Lakes with 18 points, followed by Borleis with 11, Goerges seven, Larson, Connor Davich and Lucas Mumm each with six, Jack Kreitz five, and Austin Manderson and Erik Elverum each with four. Perry Foster led the Warriors with 16.

The Pequot Lakes seventh-grade team was defeated by Deer River by three points while the eighth-graders lost by two points.

PL freshmen defeated

The Pequot Lakes freshmen boys’ basketball team lost to Brainerd 79-29 on Thursday, Nov. 29.

Connor Dale led the Patriots with 12 points while Hunter Goerges had eight. Gage Westlund added three while Jordan Oaks, Cody Huss and Josh Buell each had two. Westlund and Huss are both eighth graders.

Patriots' JV girls 2-0

The Pequot Lakes junior varsity girls’ basketball team defeated Pierz 51-44 on Tuesday, Nov. 27, and downed Bemidji 45-32 on Thursday, Nov. 29.

Against Pierz, the Patriots trailed 22-21 at intermission before coming back to outscore the hosts 30-22 in the second half. Pequot Lakes trailed 26-25 in the second half before going on a 14-5 run. Morgan Lohmiller’s three-point basket gave the Patriots a 39-31 lead.

“We turned the ball over too many times, and we missed too many easy shots,” said Pequot Lakes coach Kate Dale, “but we did make a nice run to get the lead, and we were able to hold it.”

Kelsey Hart led the Patriots with 10 points while Emilee Buell and Jessica Faacks each had nine, Hailey Wiebolt had six, Lohmiller five, and Alex Nelson and Laura Squires each had four.

Against Bemidji, Pequot Lakes fell behind 8-1 before going on a 10-2 run to take the lead. The Patriots eventually led 19-14 at the half, and never trailed in the second half.

Caitie Ryan and Emilee Buell each had 10 points and Squires added eight.
